Self-Sufficiency / Smallholding / Cottage Economy

Cottage Economy

William Cobbett wrote ´Cottage Economy´ with the twofold aim of instructing country labourers in the arts of ´brewing beer, making bread, keeping cows, pigs, bees, ewes, poultry, rabbits and other matters´ and promoting his personal philosophy of self-sufficiency, which he viewed as the foundation of family happiness. First published as partwork in 1821-2, ´Cottage Economy´ has enjoyed classic status ever since.  This  Rural Classic edition is the first edition since 1979. For anyone in search of what Cobbett called ´a good living´ - the good life - on anything from a farm to a backyard plot, ´Cottage Economy´ has lost none of its relevance or inspiration over the ensuing 180 years.  Written with Cobbett´s typical wit - and bulldog curmudgeonliness - it deserves all its reputation as the founding bible of self-sufficiency and one of Britian´s greatest rural reads.
